Setting

The beginning of this novel takes place in the Bay Area. When Nic was young,he lived with both of his parents in Berkeley, California. But eventually his mom moved to Los Angeles due to the divorce. Berkeley was an interesting environment for Nic because of the open access to different drugs. SInce Nic went to UC Berkeley, it was harder to say no to drugs, and as most people know, in college drugs and alcohol are very popular.

Later in the novel, David Sheff got married again. He got married to a woman named Karen. Because of this marriage,  Nic and his dad ended up moving to this small town outside of San Francisco, called Point Reyes. Point Reyes is a small town and not that many people live there. This town also has many beaches and because of this Nic and his father would go surfing . Overall Point Reyes was a nice suburban area.

As Nic continued to grow up,he started to use drugs. As Nic continued to use drugs, it became a more serious problem. Nic’s drug use became so serious, that he had to attend rehab over and over again. One rehab that Nic attended was in San Francisco. The name of this rehab house was Ohlhoff rehab center, and it was in a San Francisco Victorian. This rehab center had many people such as gay people, people who had a serious drug addiction, and addictions from all types. None of Nic’s rehabs really helped. Most of them were 28 day programs and as soon as Nic got out he was back on  Methamphetamine. But ,one day Nic went to a rehab program in L.A. The program that Nic went to was really helpful and it helped him get off drugs and stay off.

In conclusion, the setting of Beautiful Boy is interesting. The setting of this novel is wonderful and great because it is many different places. All of the places from L.A to the Bay Area, and even the east cost has affected Nic and his family. As Nic went on his tough journey with Methenpetamine,he did travel a lot,and he is now better.Nic is mainly better because he went to a great rehab.Overall, the setting of Beautiful Boy has a huge impact on Nic and his journey.
